The state already takes half his paycheck and divides it up, which doesn’t amount to much when Hatchett is making only minimum wage. Some of the moms receive as little as $1.49 a month. The oldest child is 14 years old.

A Ukrainian reporter got a little too jiggy with Will Smith at the Moscow premiere for Men in Black 3 — earning a shove and light slap from the angry movie star, clearly annoyed at having a strange man kiss him repeatedly on the face.

The footage, obtained by TMZ, shows Smith in his typical good spirits making his way down the red carpet, openly accepting an embrace from the reporter. But things grow quickly tense as the man, wearing a white blazer, plants two kisses on either side of Smith’s face, during which the two men’s mouths come in close contact. “What the hell is your problem, buddy?!” Smith says as he pushes the reporter away, then back-hand slaps him on the cheek. Moments later, a slightly shaken Smith is heard to say, “He’s lucky I didn’t sucker-punch him.”

TMZ notes the reporter’s amorous interview methods are all part of his “shtick.”

The mass dumping of headless bodies administers a shock to Mexico, long numbed by a death count of nearly 50,000 brought on by president Felipe Calderon’s war against the crime cartels. By the time his tenure ends this December, six years after his declaration, that number will likely surpass 60,000.

What kind of headway has the country made since 2006? Of the seven major cartels, some have vanished, but smaller syndicates have scrambled into the vacuum. The two largest—Sinaloa and Los Zetas—remain in power and at each other’s throats. A beefed-up federal force has supplanted Mexico’s underpaid, poorly treated, corrupt police force, but corruption persists, and journalists are being killed.

The U.S. has been guarding its borders closely against violence, although the demand for drugs hasn’t deviated much since 2006. Nor have the American gangsters who facilitate the network. Worse, the barbarism—with notes taken from the al-Qaida playbook—has escalated.

Mexico crime siteMother’s Day massacre in Mexico—49 to 70: The corpses, mostly men, were dumped Sunday on a highway in Cadereyta, Nuevo Leon, about 75 miles outside Texas. The corpses’s heads, hands, and feet had been chopped off. First reports estimated there were 49 headless bodies, but the count may actually be closer to 70; the actual number won’t be known until the body parts are untangled.

According to Borderland Beat, these deaths resulted from a power struggle between the two largest drug cartels and were reportedly timed for Mother’s Day, May 10 in Mexico—and a day when some mothers marched to protest the government’s failure to stop the killings.

Los Zetas retaliated against the butchering spree by Sinaloas and its newest ally, the Gulf Cartel. The Gulf Cartel has been fighting with the Zetas since 2010 for Nuevo Leon turf. (Mexico has 32 states, and Nuevo Leon borders Texas.) Years ago, the Zetas were the gunmen for the Gulf Cartel.

Los Zetas signature at dumping siteThe message behind the mutilations: The inhumanity amounts to near genocide. Heads have been thrown into nightclubs and one victim’s face was skinned and sewn onto a football. There’s been a resurgence in beheadings, thanks to cartel leaders inspired by al-Qaida execution videos. Every cut sends a message, and the extreme violence is intended to cow an embattled nation.

If a tongue is cut out it means the victim has talked too much. A person who has given up any information on a cartel, no matter how minuscule, has his finger cut off and put into his mouth upon his death. This is because a traitor is known as a “dedo”—a finger… If you are castrated it means that either you have slept with a cartel member’s woman or you have, in the case of a government official, police or the military, become too boastful about battling the cartels. Severed arms mean you stole from your consignment of illegal goods or skimmed profits. Severed legs mean that you tried to walk away from the cartel. Decapitation, however, is something altogether different. It is a statement of raw power, a warning to all, like the public executions of old. In other words, “we rule here.” These are just a few of the symbolic “messages” the cartels use. (Spring 2012, Counterterrorism & Homeland Security Reports)

A study on leadership decapitation highlights its barbaric effectiveness, at least within a military context:

Taking hostages and ritually beheading them has emerged as a popular terrorist tactic for radical groups… Terrorists hope to strike fear into the populace, in order to influence political decisions and weaken the resolve of nations and individuals who might support the global war on terrorism. Their actions also have tremendous cultural and symbolic significance for their audience, which includes other insurgents, potential recruits, and local citizens. (June 2005, Terrorist Beheadings: Cultural and Strategic Implications)

Mexico’s elite police forceThe death count is stabilizing, but the violence will spread. The murder rate is “stabilizing,” according to Jorge Castaneda, foreign minister of Mexico from 2000 to 2003.

It has pretty much leveled off at about 1,000 drug-linked executions a month—about 12,000 per year. All very high levels, but it is no longer growing. (May 14, MSNBC)

InSight Crime, however, has taken the mass murders as a sign of expansion.

The recent incidents in Nuevo Laredo, Jalisco, and Cadereyta also promise a return of the use of mass body dumps for targeting enemies… Prior to this recent batch of incidents, however, mass killings and subsequent displays of the dead had been rare. In addition to delivering a substantial upward jolt to Mexico’s murder rate, the regular appearance of scores of dead bodies also magnifies the fear and insecurity among the public.
There is no indication that there has been any decrease in overall drug consumption in the U.S. The Americans point to some decline in powder cocaine but an increase in marijuana, methamphetamines, etc. Those come from Mexico also.
The U.S. also supplies weapons to the south.
We use cellphones every day. But for a growing number of people, staying connected is an obsession.

According to a study by SecurEnvoy, a company that deals in mobile phone technology, the fear of being apart from your cellphone is on the rise.

It’s called Nomophobia, as in “No mobile phone phobia,” and 66 percent of the people surveyed said they have it.

That number is up from a similar study four years ago, where 53 percent of people admitted to a fear of losing their cellphones.

Dr. Mitch Spero, director of child and family psychologists in Broward County, said it was common to see problems arise because of cellphone use.

“Cellphones are tools that should be used to enhance our lives,” he warned, “not to destroy our interpersonal communication skills with those that we love.”

The study by SecurEnvoy shows that people check their cellphones an average of 34 times a day. But for Karla Campos from Pembroke Pines, that’s nothing.

Campos estimates that she checks her phone closer to 50 times a day, and she even sleeps with it.

“Before I go to sleep, I put it under my pillow,” said Campos, who owns a web services company called Gig Logo.

No matter what, ‘it goes with me’ According to the study, 75 percent of people use their cellphones in the bathroom.

Scott Miller-Farrugia from Coral Springs admitted to being one of those people.

“I bring it into the bathroom instead of the newspaper,” he said.

Scott’s wife Shellie is such a cellphone addict, her nickname is “Celly.”

“No matter where I am, it goes with me,” she said.

Campos takes “everywhere” to the extreme, bringing her cellphone into the shower, “just in case it rings and somebody needs me.”

For the record, Campos said she placed the phone on a ledge where it stays dry.

She also uses her cellphone to communicate with her 10-year-old son. But not necessarily when they’re apart.

“He doesn’t talk to me, I see him and pass by and he just says ‘Hi Mom,’” Campos explained, “but when I have real conversation with him, it’s on the phone, through Facebook.”

Campos argued that any form of communication is better than none at all, and said she believes the cellphone connects her family.

Spero disagreed. “What I recommend is to keep your cellphone there for emergencies, but when you’re with someone make them the priority in your life,” he said.

The study showed that the younger you are, the more likely you are to be afflicted with Nomophobia. Women are also more likely to have it than men.

Wondering if you have Nomophobia?

The warning signs include: Obsessively checking your phone, constantly worrying about losing it even when it’s in a safe place, and never turning it off.

Two F-22 Raptor pilots have said publicly that not only are they afraid to fly the most expensive fighter jets in American history, but the military has attempted to silence them and other F-22 pilots by threatening their careers.

“There have been squadrons that have stood down over concerns. And there’s been threat of reprisals,” F-22 pilot Josh Wilson told CBS News’ “60 Minutes” Sunday. “There’s been threat of flying evaluation boards clipping our wings and doing ground jobs. And… in my case, potentially getting booted out of the Air Force.

“So right now there’s an example being set of, ‘Hey, if you speak up about safety, you’re going to be out of the organization,’” Wilson said.

Despite the Air Force’s glowing descriptions of the next-generation jet as America’s future of air dominance, as an ABC News “Nightline” investigation broadcast last week found, unknown problems with the plane’s oxygen system have already contributed to the death of one pilot, the near-death of another and mid-air scares for dozens more.

READ Exclusive: Family Demands Truth in Air Force F-22 Pilot’s Death

Wilson and fellow F-22 pilot Jeremy Gordon, both veteran fighter pilots for the Virginia Air National Guard who came forward under whistleblower protection from Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R.-Ill.), have asked not to fly the F-22 anymore, according to CBS News, citing their concerns with the oxygen problem.

Gordon said that two weeks after he requested not to fly the jet, he was called before a board of officers.

“I was asked to make a decision that day whether I wanted to fly or find another line of work,” he said.

Several current and former F-22 pilots contacted by ABC News for its investigation either did not respond or quickly declined to comment on the plane and two relatives of flyers told ABC News that the pilots had been instructed not to speak to the media on penalty of potentially losing their post with the F-22 — a coveted position despite the safety concerns. One pilot, when initially contacted by ABC News for comment, agreed to speak on the record but only after he checked with the Air Force public affairs office. Since then, the pilot has not responded to any of ABC News’ attempts to communicate.

Air Force spokesperson John Dorrian told ABC News he has no information about any pilots being explicitly told not to speak to the media about the Raptor and noted that several F-22 pilots have been made available to the press at Air Force events. Dorrian did say that if a member of the Air Force wishes to speak with the media as a representative of the Air Force, that engagement is conducted through the Air Force public affairs office, but whistleblowers are still protected.

“Corporately, the Air Force position is the Air Force is not going to tolerate any reprisal actions against whistleblowers,” Dorrian said.

Since Wilson and Gordon are assigned to the Virginia Air National Guard, Dorrian said he did not have specific information on their case. Officials at the Virginia Air National Guard did not immediately return requests for comment for this report.

Top officials at the Air Force and Lockheed Martin refused to take part in one-on-one interviews with ABC News for its broadcast report, but the Air Force provided a statement last week in which it says the service is committed to “unparalleled dedication to flight safety.”

“Flying America’s premier fighter aircraft always entails risk but the Air Force has, and always will, take every measure to ensure the safety of our aircrews while delivering air superiority for the nation,” the statement said. The Air Force has also stressed that reports of “hypoxia-like symptoms” are exceedingly rare — more than two dozen compared to the thousands of flights flown without incident.

Last week the Air Force officially received the last F-22 Raptor from defense contracting giant Lockheed Martin, completing an order of 187 planes that cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $79 billion — meaning that including research, development and production among other costs, each plane has a price tag of more than $420 million. Despite being the most advanced fighters on the planet, none of the planes have been used on a combat mission since they went combat-ready in late 2005. Critics told ABC News that’s because the jet was designed to fight rival, sophisticated fighters – an enemy that doesn’t exist right now.

READ: Final F-22 Delivered, McCain Says $79B Jets Still Have No Mission

F-22 Pilot Blamed in Fatal Crash After Plane Malfunction

Capt. Jeff Haney was flying the Air Force’s next-generation stealth F-22 Raptor on a routine training mission in Alaska in November 2010 when a sudden malfunction cut off his oxygen completely. Capt. Haney never made a distress call but took his plane into a dive and, a little over a minute later, crashed into the winter wilderness at faster than the speed of sound.

After a lengthy investigation, an Air Force Accident Investigation Board could not find the cause of the malfunction but determined “by clear and convincing evidence” that in addition to other factors, Haney was to blame for the crash because he was too distracted by his inability to breathe to fly the plane properly.

READ: Air Force’s Accident Investigation Board Report (PDF)

But Haney’s sister, Jennifer, told ABC News in an exclusive interview she believes her brother blacked out trying to save himself and said that by blaming him, the Air Force was attempting to deflect attention from the ongoing, mysterious oxygen problem with the costly planes.

“I don’t agree with [the Air Force]. I think there was a lot more going on inside that cockpit,” Jennifer Haney said. “A cover-up? I don’t know. But there’s something.”

In at least 25 cases since 2008, F-22 pilots have reported experiencing “hypoxia-like symptoms” in mid-air, according to the Air Force. Last year the Air Force grounded the full fleet of F-22s for nearly five months to investigate, but still no one knows what is going wrong, even as the planes are back in the air. Hypoxia is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain and is characterized by dizziness, confusion, lack of judgment and, eventually, unconsciousness.

In one case before the grounding, a pilot became so disoriented that his plane dropped down and skimmed treetops before he managed to save himself and return to base, an Air Force spokesperson told ABC News. Presumably speaking of the same incident, Gordon told “60 Minutes” the pilot had to be told he had hit the trees — he didn’t remember doing it himself.

Wilson described experiencing apparent hypoxia while in the cockpit as a “surreal experience” and Gordon said the onset is “insidious.”

“Some pilots will go the entire mission, land and not know anything went wrong,” Gordon said.

To Jennifer Haney, every time an F-22 goes up, it’s risking the life of its pilot. She spoke to ABC News because she said she couldn’t stand to see another family go through what hers had.

“I know that the Air Force has said that they were very proud to have Jeff and are very sorry for our loss — well then, in Jeff’s name, fix this,” she said. “We want to make sure Jeff did not die in vain — that his death will mean something and that if it saves lives of pilots now, future pilots, then he died for the greater good or something.”

The Air Force has already begun to enact changes to the jet in hopes of mitigating the oxygen problem, including adding pilot-monitoring equipment and improving the emergency oxygen system.

But for all their effort, the Air Force still doesn’t have what Jennifer Haney said is most important both to her family and to the families of pilots that risk their lives every day at the controls of the F-22: answers.

“I believe Jeff deserves that. That was my baby brother and I believe he deserves that. He deserves the truth to be told as to what happened. Not anybody’s guesses,” she said. “He deserves the truth. He deserves honor and so do his little girls.”

NEW YORK — Three employees of NBC or an NBC-owned television station have now lost their jobs because of editing changes to a call made to police by George Zimmerman on the night he shot Trayvon Martin.

Lilia Luciano, an NBC News correspondent based in Miami, is no longer working at the network, spokeswoman Amy Lynn said. Her departure came as a result of an investigation into her March 20 “Today” show report on the Martin case.

Each of the reports on either “Today” or NBC’s Miami station WTVJ involve editing of Zimmerman’s phone call to a dispatcher that emphasizes his identification of Martin as a black male. Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., is charged with second-degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Martin, a case that has increased racial tensions.

In the report involving Luciano, audio of the police phone call was edited to insert a reference to Martin’s race that had been made later in the conversation.

Last month, an NBC News producer was fired in connection with a March 27 “Today” show report where a tape of the call was edited to suggest that Zimmerman volunteered to police that “this guy looks like he’s up to no good. He’s black.”

The broadcast portion of the audio had deleted a part of the conversation where the police dispatcher asked Zimmerman about whether a suspicious male he was reporting was “black, white or Hispanic.” Zimmerman answered, “he looks black.”

Lynn said Friday that NBC News’ investigation into the reports has ended.

In an investigation about a separate incident, reporter Jeff Burnside of WTVJ lost his job because of a March 19 report on the dispatcher’s call that similarly edited out the dispatcher’s question that prompted Zimmerman’s characterization of Martin as black, said Matt Glassman, spokesman for the NBC-owned station.

The WTVJ report did not air on any other NBC stations, he said.

Last week, WTVJ aired an apology to its viewers for the report on some of its newscasts, and posted it on the station’s website. The statement said that “an error in editorial judgment was made in which a question from the operator was deleted which could have created the impression that Mr. Zimmerman’s statement may have been singling out Trayvon Martin because of his race.

“We take this incident very seriously and apologize to our viewers,” WTVJ said. “After conducting an extensive investigation, we are putting a more stringent editorial process in place to ensure this does not happen again.”

NBC News did not immediately respond to questions about whether the “Today” show has addressed the misleading reports on the air, or whether there are any plans to do so.

Brent Bozell, founder of the conservative media watchdog the Media Research Center, said NBC still has not come clean.

“The truth has been withheld from NBC’s own viewers now for more than one month,” he said. “Do the network executives at NBC think that this is acceptable?”

SACRAMENTO—

Sacramento-based Paladin Security is defending itself in the court of public opinion against a lawsuit it calls frivolous.

The lawsuit, filed last month in Sacramento Superior Court, claims Paladin security guards carried out a military-style raid at the plaintiff’s condo in Elk Grove in the early morning hours of April 30, 2011. The guards pointed Taser guns at the residents of the condo, according the complaint.

Paladin co-owner Scott Johnson says it’s clear that the plaintiff wants money

“He was fishing on the first day that I spoke with him,” Johnson said.

When FOX40 contacted the plaintiff, Steven Saxon, he asked if we’d pay to get the story. FOX40 refused. Saxon went on to say that they already have big money offers on-the-table from other media outlets.

Saxon’s attorney, Jeffrey Jacobs, did not return calls or an email seeking comment.

Elk Grove police says no report was ever filed by Saxon.
